In addition to the temporary border controls already in place at the land borders with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland, the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and Home Affairs also announced further border controls yesterday. These will begin on Monday, 16 September 2024, at Germany’s land borders with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark for a period of six months.
There are no plans to close the borders, as was the case during the coronavirus pandemic. Border commuters or people travelling to Germany should allow extra travel time. Travellers should also carry a valid identity document (passport or identity card) with them. The following applies: A foreign driving licence is not considered an official identification document in Germany.
According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Police, in coordination with partner authorities in Germany and abroad, will endeavour to ensure that the controls have as little impact as possible on the everyday lives of commuters, on trade and on travel.
