Family members of Dutch civil servants in the EU no longer insured in the Netherlands

28. February 2024

Since 1 January 2024, the social security status of family members of civil servants working within the EU/EFTA has changed. As of this year, family members who do not work in the other member state and do not receive short-term benefits are subject to the social security regulations of the country of residence. Accordingly, they are no longer insured under the Dutch social security schemes AOW, ANW, child benefit and WLZ.

As the family members are no longer subject to AOW pension insurance, they can (must) take out voluntary insurance and the Dutch WLZ health insurance will be cancelled. Alternatively, you can take out expat insurance with additional reimbursement options. Further information on this can be found on the SZVK website.

Family members of diplomats and consular officials abroad remain insured under the Dutch health insurance scheme.
